Creating a calendar in Microsoft Word is easier than many people realize. Whether you need a personal planner, a printable family schedule, or a custom calendar for work, Word includes built-in templates and formatting tools that make the process simple.
Instead of designing a calendar from scratch, you can use one of Word’s ready-made templates and customize it to suit your needs.
Create a Calendar Using a Template
The fastest way to make a calendar in Word is by using one of Microsoft’s templates.
Step 1: Open Word
Launch Microsoft Word and select New from the left sidebar.
Step 2: Search for Calendar Templates
In the search box, type Calendar and press Enter. Word will display a collection of free calendar templates that you can use immediately.
Step 3: Choose a Template
Browse through the available designs and click on one that fits your preferences.
Templates are available for:
- Monthly calendars
- Yearly calendars
- Academic calendars
- Photo calendars
- Planner-style calendars
Step 4: Create the Calendar
Click Create to download and open the selected template in Word. From there, you can edit text, colors, fonts, and images.
Customize Your Calendar
Once the template opens, you can personalize it in several ways.
Change the Year or Month
Many templates allow you to specify the month and year through a dedicated Calendar tab or by selecting Set Calendar Dates.
Add Holidays and Events
Click inside any date box and type important information such as:
- Birthdays
- Meetings
- School events
- Vacations
- Deadlines
Replace Images
If your template includes pictures, simply click an image and choose Change Picture to insert your own photos.
Create a Calendar From Scratch
You can also build a calendar manually.
Step 1: Insert a Table
- Open a blank Word document.
- Select Insert > Table.
- Create a table with 7 columns and 6 rows.
Step 2: Add Weekdays
Type the days of the week in the first row:
- Sunday
- Monday
- Tuesday
- Wednesday
- Thursday
- Friday
- Saturday
Step 3: Enter Dates
Fill in the remaining cells with the appropriate dates for the month.
Step 4: Format the Calendar
Use Word’s formatting tools to:
- Change cell colors
- Adjust borders
- Modify fonts
- Resize rows and columns
- Insert images or icons
Print Your Calendar
After finishing your design:
- Click File.
- Select Print.
- Choose your printer settings.
- Print the calendar or save it as a PDF.
