For years, Apple’s MacBook Pro lineup has dominated conversations about powerful yet efficient laptops. Now, NVIDIA and Microsoft are trying to change that with a completely new platform. The newly announced RTX Spark chip is NVIDIA’s first major push into mainstream Windows laptop processors, and it is making its debut inside the new Microsoft Surface Laptop Ultra.
The announcement marks one of the biggest shifts in the Windows PC market in years. Instead of relying on traditional Intel or AMD processors, the Surface Laptop Ultra uses NVIDIA’s new Arm-based RTX Spark superchip, combining CPU, GPU, AI processing, and unified memory into a single platform. Microsoft describes the Surface Laptop Ultra as its most powerful Surface device ever.
What Is NVIDIA RTX Spark?
RTX Spark is a new Windows-focused system-on-chip designed by NVIDIA for AI workloads, content creation, gaming, and advanced computing. The chip combines NVIDIA’s Grace CPU architecture with a Blackwell RTX GPU and unified memory, similar to the approach used by Apple Silicon processors.
According to NVIDIA, the flagship RTX Spark configuration can include:
- Up to 20 CPU cores
- 6,144 CUDA GPU cores
- Up to 128GB unified LPDDR5X memory
- Up to 300GB/s memory bandwidth
- Up to 1 petaflop of AI performance
NVIDIA says the chip was built specifically for AI-powered Windows PCs capable of running advanced local AI models, creative software, and modern games without relying heavily on cloud processing.
Microsoft Surface Laptop Ultra Is First
Microsoft is the first company to officially launch a laptop powered by RTX Spark. The new Surface Laptop Ultra is positioned as a premium device aimed at creators, developers, AI professionals, and power users.
The laptop includes:
- 15-inch PixelSense Ultra mini-LED display
- Up to 2,000 nits HDR brightness
- Large haptic touchpad
- HDMI, USB-C, USB-A, SD card slot, and headphone jack
- Under 4.5 pounds weight
- Up to 128GB unified memory
Microsoft says the laptop was engineered around the RTX Spark platform from the beginning, focusing on performance, cooling, battery life, and portability.
Built for AI Workloads
The biggest focus of RTX Spark is artificial intelligence. NVIDIA claims the chip can run large AI models locally and support advanced AI agents directly on the device. The company says RTX Spark systems can handle models with up to 120 billion parameters while offering up to one million tokens of context in supported workloads.
Microsoft and NVIDIA are also working together on new Windows features designed specifically for local AI processing. This includes security systems and software frameworks intended to help AI agents run directly on Windows devices instead of relying entirely on cloud servers.
RTX Graphics Without a Separate GPU
One of the most interesting parts of RTX Spark is that it combines high-end RTX graphics directly into the chip. NVIDIA says performance can reach levels comparable to some RTX 5070 laptop systems while maintaining much lower power usage.
The Blackwell GPU inside RTX Spark supports:

- AI rendering tools
- Ray tracing
This could make RTX Spark laptops attractive for video editing, 3D rendering, game development, content creation, and AI-assisted workflows.
NVIDIA Wants to Challenge Apple
Many analysts are already comparing RTX Spark to Apple’s M-series chips. Both platforms combine CPU, GPU, memory, and AI processing into a unified architecture focused on efficiency and performance.
The difference is that RTX Spark brings NVIDIA’s graphics ecosystem to Windows laptops. That means support for CUDA, RTX technologies, AI frameworks, creative software, and gaming features that many professionals already use.
If NVIDIA’s performance claims hold up in real-world testing, RTX Spark could become one of the strongest competitors to Apple’s MacBook Pro lineup.
More RTX Spark Laptops Are Coming
Microsoft will not be the only company using RTX Spark. NVIDIA confirmed that additional devices are planned from major manufacturers including ASUS, Dell, HP, Lenovo, MSI, Acer, and Gigabyte. These systems are expected to launch later this year.
That means the Surface Laptop Ultra may only be the beginning of a much larger RTX Spark ecosystem across Windows devices.
