How to create and use sections in Microsoft Word

Microsoft Word sections are a powerful feature that allows you to divide a document into parts and apply different formatting to each part. This is especially useful when you need different headers, footers, page numbering styles, or layouts within the same document.

What Are Sections in Microsoft Word?

A section is a part of a Word document where formatting can be controlled independently from other parts. By using sections, you can change page orientation, margins, columns, headers, and footers without affecting the entire document.

Why Use Section Breaks?

Section breaks are useful when you want to:

  • Use different page numbering styles in one document
  • Apply different headers or footers in specific parts
  • Switch between portrait and landscape pages
  • Create chapters or structured documents
  • Use different column layouts in the same file

Types of Section Breaks

Microsoft Word offers several section break options:

Next Page

Starts a new section on the next page. This is commonly used for chapters or major document divisions.

Continuous

Starts a new section on the same page. Useful for changing formatting such as columns without starting a new page.

Even Page

Starts a new section on the next even-numbered page. Often used in printed books.

Odd Page

Starts a new section on the next odd-numbered page, also useful for book formatting.

How to Insert a Section Break

Follow these steps to add a section break in Word:

  1. Place your cursor where you want the new section to begin
  2. Go to the Layout tab
  3. Click Breaks
  4. Under Section Breaks, choose the type you need
  5. Word will automatically split your document into separate sections

How Sections Affect Formatting

Each section in Word can have its own formatting settings. This means:

  • Headers and footers can be different in each section
  • Page numbers can restart or continue depending on settings
  • Margins and page orientation can change per section
  • Columns can vary between sections

How to Remove or Change a Section Break

If you want to remove a section break:

  1. Go to the Home tab
  2. Click the Show/Hide ¶ button
  3. Locate the section break in your document
  4. Select it and press Delete

You can also change a section break type by selecting it and choosing a different option from the Breaks menu.
